Handwoven scarves

Suzanne Lovejoy is a self-taught weaver who has been refining her art for more than 25 years. She creates luxurious, colorful, easy to love handmade fabric and turns it into the scarves you'll see here and other sumptuous clothing.

During her high school years, Suzanne began making tapestries, focusing on texture and color. In 1980, she began merging the color and texture with weaving to make wearable fabric.

Suzanne designs and weaves her cloth on a traditional, foot-powered floor loom at her studio in southern Vermont . The finished fabric is then cut and sewn into clothing and the wonderful scarves featured at Vermont Artisan Designs and on this site.

The loom is pattern-driven. As I got more familiar with weaving techniques, I was able to do intricate patterns that were impossible without the loom. As I work with more complicated looms, I find I can weave more intricate patterns in a timely manner to allow me to make limited editions of clothing.

"Color and pattern are the emphasis of my work," she said. "I'm told that no one does color like I do. I've been called the 'Queen of Color' and the 'Rembrandt of weavers.' It's innate, nothing taught. It just something I instinctively do. I just see it."

Others tend to acknowledge her results, too. In 2005, she won the prestigious Niche Magazine award for weaving with a dress and jacket ensemble.

Galleries across the U.S. show her work.
