Blue and white pottery has been a part of man's history since ancient times. People of all cultures have appreciated its beauty, whether the piece was functional or decorative. As we hold a blue and white mug or bowl, we are connected to these people by a common appreciation, according to Anna Fadeley.
Anna makes hand-formed and decorated functional stoneware in southern Vermont . The designing and production of the pottery is done by just one person. The uncomplicated shapes provide a wonderful surface for the delicate cobalt oxide brushwork, which has been influenced by American Crewel, Nowegian Rosemaling and Indian Beadwork.
Each piece is made by hand, either on a potter's wheel or from a slab of clay molded around a form. The decorations are made individually, without patterns, on the unfired clay. After the brushwork is fired onto the pot, it is dipped in a lead-free glaze and fired again to approximately 2300 degrees Fahrenheit. Although this pottery is stoneware and very durable, care should be taken in its use. It is oven-proof, dishwasher safe, lead-free and microwavable.
Anna's work is found in homes and collections throughout the United States.
